Water pollution in Hawaii
Abstract>>
Recently we have a lot of environmental problems.
Expecially in Hawaii, there are several environment problems.
Of those, I am going to talk about water pollution
in Hawaii. I also prepared some article about the cause
and some examples of the water pollution.
I also plan to talk about my 3 argument.
One thing is that we have to investigate more detailed.
The second thing is that we have to enforce the laws.
The third thing is that we have to improve technology.
Most articles come from Lexis-Nexis.
After finishing finding these articles, I came to know
the water pollution in Hawaii.
These days water in Hawaii is more and more getting worse.
It means that water in Hawaii is polluted by something.
Which causes make water dirty? In here, there are 3
reasons. According to the Honolulu advertiser(UPI, 2006, par.4),
“the problem was caused by breaks in sewage lines that spilled
thousands of gallons of raw sewage into a canal, Honolulu Harbor
and eventually the ocean around Oahu.” As we know, Hawaii has
many various beaches. For example, there are Bellows,
Waimanalo, Kalama Beach, Magic Island Finger and so on.
Of those beaches, Waikiki received a deathblow. But they
said several beaches are also dangerous, because the sewage
overflow can pollute many of the beaches except Waikiki area,
and heavy rains caused spills anywhere in an instant
due to the neighboring ocean. Kathi Moore (Associated Press, 2006a,
par. 8) said that “the spill shows that the island’s sewer system
is vulnerable to break downs and need costly repairs.” It shows us
that it is our faults and our tasks to
solve. Next, According to (Associated Press 2006b, part,6)
Tesoro Hawaii Official, “(T)here were any effects from the 2,000
gallons of light crude oil. ” I came to know coral reefs while
I was looking for some harmful concrete examples. In Hawaii,
coral reefs more and more are getting
contaminated. As a results, they are just dying. Barnard
(Groups seek to protect coral reefs from damage, 2006 ,par.1)
guesses that death of the coral reefs in Hawaii come
from an oil spill off Mexico. In addition, he quotes
Gulko as saying, “A developer in
Hawaii recently agreed to pay a $200,000 fine
for erosion that deposited silt on a coral
reef.” It appears that this problem is very serious.
The last one is storm water pollution in
Hawaii. It is usually damaged by construction activity.
Grant Y. Nakayama (Hawaii landowner agrees to pay $7.5
million for storm water pollution, 2006, par.7) said that runoff
is a primary contributor to the damageof the water quality
because it included a lot of dirt and polluted things.
Actually, if someone want to construct some
place, they have to be permitted by Environmental
Protection Agency. But people don’t want to do that
because they ask them install costly environmental machine.
Therefore, as result of this unpermitted
construction activity, discharges of storm water bring
damaging a beach front home and the beach and coral
reefs in Hawaii. According to Hawaii Department Of Health,
“Pflueger (who does illegal things in Hawaii)will spend
approximately $5.3 million to prevent erosion and restore streams
at areas damaged by the construction activity.” It
show us that this problem is also serious.
We have to prevent water pollution. Because ecosystem
is one, if we give them bad effect, they also give us bad effect.
First, we have to investigate more detailed and specific
what is the water pollution’s cause and then we have to
apply these investigations in a timely way
in this problem. According to Barnard (2006, par. 1),
“(w)hen death strikes a coral reef, whether an oil spill
Mexico or sediment unleashed by a dam
bursting in Hawaii.” It means that nobody know the exact
cause. So people contact problem at first,
they are embarrassed about this problem. So we have to exactly
know the cause. According to Song (Man dies days after
plunging into sewage-contaminated waters, 2006, par.1),
A 34-year old man died after plunging into sewage-contaminated
water at a Waikiki boat harbor. In this situation, we
already know that Waikiki is polluted by sewage. We should
have informed people and cared people. Although it is important
to know what cause is, to deal with this problem is
also important. For example, according to Offutt
(Agencies inspect for environmental damage caused by oil spill,
2006, part 13), “ the coast guard will be looking at that ship to
make sure that everything’s in place and that it’s a safe operation.”
Next, we have to enforce the laws. One person in Hawaii
recently paid a $200,000 fine for contaminating a coral reef.
In “Groups seek to protect coral reefs from damage”
(2006, par.17), Jeff barnard was quoted as saying,
“It makes a huge difference in the willingness of people
to actually enforce marine regulation and it also makes a
difference in people being willing to follow the laws.”
It show us the law’s effect. We can strengthen the law to
reduce this problem. Grant Y. Nakayama (Hawaii landowner agrees
to pay $7.5 million for storm water pollution, 2006, par.7)
said that “ (r)un off is a primary contributor to the impairment
of the water quality and Environmental Protection
Agency is vigorously enforcing federal regulations to help
reduce this problem.” Next, we can establish the law so that
people pay a costly fine to enforce this problem. Mark Bennett
(Hawaii landowner agrees to pay $7.5 million for storm water
pollution, 2006, par. 8) said, “(p)rotecting the environment
has been a top priority of the Department of the
Attorney General. Those who violate our environmental
laws must know that when they are caught, they will
pay a very heavy price.”
Finally, we have to improve technology and then
we should use way in line with the situation and then
we need to participate in it together. According to Mikulina (Sewage
pipe that burst had ruptures, 2006, par. 9), “we will take the
necessary steps to ensure that the city takes prompt
action to identify and correct the most urgent weakness in its
sewage collection system.” From here, we can learn that the
sewage system has a problem. In that case, we can try to
improve our skill to correct the weakness of the system.
According to Tesoro spokeman Hokama, “the sun, winds
and currents combined to help quickly dissipate
most of oil spilled when a hose separated from a
ship during unloading at Tesoro Hawaii’s mooring
off Barbers points.” We also can use a natural way. Of course,
it depends on the situation. Sometimes, we need natural power
more than any artificial skill. After finishing a detailed observation,
we can judge the better decision in accordance with
situation. And then, we can participate in this problem.
Some people also desire to join them. For example,
there are a group of volunteers and a group of advertising people.
No matter how there is minority opinion, they want to hear
our opinion and thinking. The Department Of Health
(US Fed News, 2006, par.11) said, “(a)ll comments and
requests received on time will be considered.”
And they look for someone who is
interested in this problem. But, some people
said that it’s not our business. I think that it’s
kind of silly thinking. It’s our problem; in addition,
it’s the world’s matter. So we have to be
interested in that matter. If we don’t pay attention,
it will cause the biggest problem without our
knowledge.
In conclusion, the water pollution is definitely a
serious problem. The water is important.
It’s necessary in our life. And then, some
people said that the water is kind of
healthy food. Due to the ecosystem,
nature, people and animal and plants
are related with each other. While we live in the earth,
they can not be separated. The water also
takes such a long time to be restored if it is spoiled.
Even though they are not exterminated
things, we have to protect the water for the next
generation. So if we saw some polluted place,
we must find some solutions and do something
without carelessness. If we do it this way,
we can live together forever without bad results
We also have to know water’s value. In order to know
this very well, we should constantly try to do our best.
